Connecting Graphic Medicine to Communities You Serve with Programming: January 9, 2019

>>OKAY, WE’RE GOING TO GO AHEAD AND GET STARTED. SO THANK YOU FOR JOINING US TODAY FOR THE WEBINAR, AND THE GOAL IS BY THE END OF THE PROGRAM YOU WILL BE ENERGIZED TO INCLUDE GRAPHIC MEDICINE IN THE WORK THAT DO YOU AND BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE POTENTIAL STRENGTHS AND PIT FALLS OF THIS KIND OF PROGRAMMING. WE ACTUALLY HAVE A VERY LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE ON SO DURING THE Q & A SESSION I AM GOING TO KEEP YOU MUTED BUT PLEASE USE THE CHAT BOX TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU HAVE. SO I HAVE SOMEBODY IN THE CHAT BOX ASKING IF THIS IS ANY — CAN YOU HEAR ME? OKAY, SO REAL QUICK AGENDA, WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION, JUST A QUICK OVERVIEW OF NLM AND NNLM, OUR HOST FOR TODAY ALICE STOKES TALK ABOUT THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE AND BOOK CLUB THAT THEY RUN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT AND THEN TORI ROSSETTI WILL TALK ABOUT THE PROGRAMMING THAT WE DID HERE AT UMASS MEDICAL SCHOOL WHEN THE NLM TRAVELING EXHIBIT WAS ON DISPLAY AND AT THE END, WE WILL HAVE PLENTY OF TIME FOR DISCUSSION AND Q & A. SO JUST REAL QUICK, NLM, NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE IS THE WORLD’S LARGEST BIOMEDICAL LIBRARY. IT MAINTAINS AND MAKES AVAILABLE A PRINT COLLECTION AND PRODUCES ELECTRONIC RESOURCES ON A WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS SEARCHED BILLIONS OF TIMES EACH DAY BY MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AROUND THE GLOBE. IT ALSO CONDUCTS RESEARCH AND TRAINING IN BIOMEDICAL INFORMATICS AND HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY. THE NATIONAL NETWORK OF LIBRARIES AND MEDICINE NNLM, IS EIGHT REGIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY THAT SUPPORT ALL LIBRARIES AS WELL AS WORKING WITH HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND COMMUNITY AND FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING QUALITY ACCESS TO HEALTH INFORMATION AND RESOURCES AND PARTNERING WITH LOCAL REGIONAL AND NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS TO FURTHER THE MISSION TO IMPROVE THE PUBLIC’S ACCESS TO BIOMEDICAL INFORMATION. SO THIS PRESENTATION TODAY, THIS WEBINAR, IS UNDER THAT TRAINING MANDATE THAT WE HAVE. WITH THAT, I AM GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO ALICE STOKES, THE LIAISON TO NURSING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT MEDICAL CENTER AND TO MEDICAL STUDENT EDUCATION, LARNER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE. IN 2017, SHE BEGAN A GRAPHIC MEDICINE COLLECTION AT THE DANA MEDICAL LIBRARY. SHE HAS FACILITATED TWO GRAPHIC MEDICINE BOOK CLUBS AND IS PLANNING A THIRD FOR 2019. SHE CREATED A ONE-MONTH ELECTIVE ON GRAPHIC MEDICINE AND PSYCHIATRY FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS. SO I AM GOING TO GIVE YOU THE STAGE.>>HI, EVERYBODY, MY NAME IS ALICE STOKES AND I WORK AT THE DANA MEDICAL LIBRARY AT UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT IN BURLINGTON, VERMONT. WE SERVE THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE AS WELL AS COLLEGE OF NURSING AND ALLIED HEALTH AND ACADEMIC MEDICAL CENTER AND LIKE SARAH SAID, I’M THE LIAISON TO THE PRECLINICAL MEDICAL EDUCATION, THE FIRST TWO YEARS AND ALSO TO THE NURSES HERE AT THE HOSPITAL. AND THIS CAUGHT MY EYE IN 2017 MOSTLY DUE TO THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE KITS THAT THE NEW ENGLAND REGION STARTED MAKING AVAILABLE TO LIBRARIES AND I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING NEW AND ENGAGING TO DO IN PARTICULAR TO GET THE ATTENTION OF MEDICAL STUDENTS. SO IN THE SUMMER OF 2017, WE STARTED A COLLECTION. WE HAD A FEW TITLES ALREADY IN OUR COLLECTION, ABOUT FIVE, SO WE HAVE EXPANDED IT TO ABOUT 20 SO IT IS NOT A LARGE COLLECTION LIKE MANY OF YOU MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED A FLAT BUDGET, WE HAVE HAD A FLAT BUDGET FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS AND HAVE PRETTY LIMITED COLLECTION FUNDS AT THIS POINT SO IT HAD TO BE PRETTY SMALL BUT WE CHOSE 20 GIVE OR TAKE TITLE THAT WE THOUGHT WOULD BE MOST INTERESTING TO OUR PATRON GROUPS. AND WE DISPLAYED THEM IN A LOUNGE AREA IN OUR LIBRARY SO WE HAVE REDUCED OUR KIND OF OPEN STUDY SPACE IN THE PAST YEARS BUT WE HAVE A NICE LOUNGE AREA THAT IS DIRECTLY IN THE LINE OF SIGHT WHEN YOU WALK INTO THE LIBRARY. SO A VISIBLE LOCATION AND WE PUT THEM IN FACE OUT SHELVING SO THEY ARE PRETTY EASY TO SPOT. THEY CIRCULATE LIKE OUR BOOKS DO FOR FOUR WEEKS AND YOU CAN CHECK THEM OUT BUT MANY PEOPLE JUST LOOK AT THEM AND PUT THEM BACK ON THE SHELF. SO WE USE IT AS A HOOK TO ENGAGE STUDENTS PARTICULARLY MEDICAL STUDENTS AT THE NEW MEDICAL STUDENT ACTIVITIES FAIR WE HAVE EVERY YEAR IN AUGUST, THE LIBRARY DOES RECEIVE ALL A THE MEDICAL STUDENTS FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES DURING THEIR ORIENTATION WEEK AS PART OF A TOUR BUT IT IS A DIFFICULT TIME TO REALLY CREATE A PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH STUDENTS. YOU KNOW, THEY ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHERE THEIR LOCKERS ARE, GET THEIR I.D.S, WHAT IS GOING ON. SO WE TRY TO TELL THEM A LITTLE ABOUT LIBRARY SERVICES THEN BUT OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THEY FEEL SOME CONNECTION WITH THE LIBRARY. THEY SEE US AS A FRIENDLY PLACE WITH FRIENDLY PEOPLE THAT MAYBE WE COULD OFFER THEM SOMETHING THEY WEREN’T AWARE WE DID. SO AT THIS FAIR WE TRY TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS EYE CATCHING AND IT’S KIND OF A SOCIAL EVENT AT THE END OF THEIR ORIENTATION ON A FRIDAY SO THEIR BRAINS ARE PRETTY FULL OF CRUCIAL INFORMATION. SO WE JUST TRY TO MAKE A CONNECTION WITH THEM. THERE ARE OTHER TABLES GIVING OUT SWAG, FREE BEN AND JERRY’S, BECAUSE WE’RE IN VERMONT WE TRY TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT EACH YEAR AND THIS YEAR WE HAD THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE DISPLAY THAT WAS EYE-CATCHING AND ENGAGING TO STUDENTS AND WELL-RECEIVED. AND AT THAT TIME, WE LET THEM KNOW WE WERE PLANNING TO DO BOOK CLUBS AND WE HAD NOT PICKED THE TITLE YET BUT TO LET THEM KNOW IT WAS ON ITS WAY. SO THE FIRST BOOK CLUB WE RAN IN OCTOBER 2017, WE PICKED THE BOOKS FUN HOME BY ALISON BECHDEL AND PICKED THIS BOOK FOR A COUPLE OF REASONS. AT THAT POINT, LIKE A YEAR OR TWO AFTER THE TONY AWARD-WINNING BROADWAY MUSICAL BASED ON FUN HOME HAD BEEN ON BROADWAY AND THE FIRST REGIONAL PRODUCTION WAS TAKING PLACE IN BURLINGTON DURING THAT MONTH SO THERE WAS A LOT OF LOCAL BUZZ ABOUT IT. AND IN ADDITION, SHE IS ACTUALLY A VERMONTER SO SHE’S REALLY WELL-KNOWN IN THE COMMUNITY, NOT ONLY FOR THIS BOOK BUT HER COMIC STRIP DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR RAN IN THE LOCAL PAPER FOR YEARS AND YEARS SO SHE IS PRETTY WELL-KNOWN AND HAS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF CACHET. OCTOBER IS NATIONAL COMING OUT MONTH IT FELT LIKE A NATURAL FIT. AND THIS BOOK HAD SO MANY TOPICS TO DISCUSS, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, COMING OUT, MENTAL HEALTH, SUICIDE AND SEEMED LIKE IT WAS A RICH ONE FOR DISCUSSION. AND ALSO IT WAS ONE OF THE BOOK CLUB TITLES THAT WERE AVAILABLE AS BOOK CLUB KIT FROM THE NER SO A NICE THING THAT WE WERE ABLE TO BORROW SIX ADDITIONAL BOOKS. AND WE PICKED OCTOBER BECAUSE MEDICAL STUDENTS ARE INTO THE SWING OF THINGS AND STILL PRETTY FRESH AND NOT BURNED OUT SO WE THOUGHT WE MIGHT HAVE A CHANCE TO ENGAGE THEM AT THAT POINT. ONE THING WE DID WAS WE REACHED OUT TO PARTNER WITH A MEDICAL STUDENT GROUP SINCE THEY WERE ONE OF OUR KEY AUDIENCES FOR THIS BOOK CLUB, PROBABLY OUR MOST KEY AUDIENCE. SO WE HAVE A NUMBER OF STUDENT INTEREST GROUPS ON DIFFERENT TOPICS AND THEY HAVE A STUDENT INTEREST GROUP ON GENDER AND SEXUALITY SO IT SEEMED LIKE A NATURAL FIT TO PARTNER WITH THEM. SO I REACHED OUT TO THEM, JUST TO E-MAIL THEIR LEADERS AND SAID WE’RE THINKING OF DOING THIS BOOK CLUB ON THIS TOPIC AND WHAT DO YOU THINK AND I GOT AN ENTHUSIASTIC RESPONSE FROM THEM. SO I WAS ABLE TO HAVE A PLANNING MEETING WITH THEM BEFORE WE PICKED THE DATE JUST TO GO OVER THE IDEAS THAT I HAD AND GET THEIR INPUT. AND THEY HELPED ME WITH THINGS LIKE SETTING THE DATE, FIGURING OUT A GOOD TIME TO HAVE IT, DAY OF THE WEEK AND TIME OF THE DAY AND WHAT PART OF THE MONTH WOULD BE GOOD. AND ALSO FORTUNATELY, TWO MEDICAL STUDENTS WHO WERE PART OF THAT GROUP VOLUNTEERED TO CO-HOST THE PRESENTATION WITH ME WHICH WAS GREAT SO IT WASN’T JUST ME BUT WE WERE ABLE TO HAVE SOME PEER FACILITATION WHICH WAS REALLY NICE. AND THAT IS IT ON THIS SLIDE. SO FOR PROMOTION, WE DID A FEW THINGS. SO WE MADE SOME POSTERS. THE PREVIOUS SLIDE HAD A VISUAL OF OUR POSTER AND WE HUNG THIS IN THE LIBRARY AND AROUND THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE. WE ALSO PUT UP A BLOG POST ON OUR LIBRARY WEBSITE AND PUT UP SOME SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS, INSTAGRAM AND FACEBOOK. FORTUNATELY, THE INSTAGRAM POST WAS PICKED UP BY THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE SOCIAL MEDIA GROUP THAT GAVE US A FURTHER REACH WHICH WAS REALLY NICE. AND THEN ONE OF THE THINGS ABOUT THE STUDENT INTEREST GROUP, THEIR MEMBERS PROMOTED THE EVENT ON THEIR CLASS FACEBOOK PAGES WHICH ARE INFORMAL. WE DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO THEM BUT IT IS ONE OF THE KEY WAYS MEDICAL STUDENTS COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER AND PROMOTE THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING. SO THAT WAS A REALLY BIG BENEFIT TO US BECAUSE SOMETIMES IT IS DIFFICULT FOR US AS LIBRARIANS TO KNOW HOW TO REALLY REACH THE MEDICAL STUDENTS. WE CAN’T E-MAIL CLASS LISTS SO THIS WAS A REALLY BIG BONUS. AND THEN ON THEIR OWN, THE TWO FACILITATORS CREATED A GOOGLE FORUM FOR RSVPS AND THAT WAY I COULD HAVE E-MAIL ADDRESSES TO SEND FOLLOW UP NOTICES TO FOLKS, THAT HEY, THIS IS COMING UP NEXT WEEK, A REMINDER OF WHEN IT IS AND THAT WAS REALLY, REALLY NICE. SO THE RESULT, THE FIRST BOOK CLUB WAS REALLY A BIG SUBSUCCESS. I WAS NOT SURE WHAT TO EXPECT BUT THE MEDICAL STUDENTS WERE ENTHUSIASTIC IT WAS ONE HOUR, A BROWN BAG LUNCH, I BROUGHT COOKIES AND CIDER, BECAUSE IT IS ALWAYS NICE TO HAVE FOOD AND THEN WE LENT SIX BOOKS FROM BOOK CLUB KIT, WE HAVE TWO COPIES IN OUR COLLECTION AND THEN ALSO I FOUND OUT A LOT OF PEOPLE HAD PERSONAL COPIES OR JUST HAD READ THIS BOOK ALREADY SO THEY CAME BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO TALK ABOUT IT BUT MAYBE THEY HAD READ IT A YEAR OR MORE PREVIOUS. SO IN THE END, WE HAD 11 MEDICAL STUDENTS TWO, LIBRARIANS, MYSELF AND ONE OF MY COLLEAGUES AND THEN ONE OF THE EMPLOYEE FROM THE HOSPITAL CAME. SO WE DIDN’T END UP GETTING A LOT OF FOLKS OTHER THAN THE MEDICAL STUDENTS BUT SINCE THEY WERE THE MAIN AUDIENCE FOR THIS, IT FELT OKAY TO ME. AND THE MEDICAL STUDENTS WERE REALLY ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT GETTING TO DISCUSS A BOOK IN A SETTING THAT WAS GRADED FOR THEM. THEY WANTED TO READ THE BOOK IN A LOW PRESSURE SETTING AND THEN HAVE A DISCUSSION ABOUT SOME OF THE EMOTIONAL AND PERSONAL ISSUES IN A REALLY NONTHREATENING ENVIRONMENT. IT WAS A PRETTY LOOSELY FACILITATED DISCUSSION. THE TWO STUDENT FACILITATORS AND I TOOK TURNS. WE TOOK THE BOOK CLUB GUIDE FROM THE NER AND AGAIN, HIGHLIGHTED THE QUESTIONS WE WANTED TO USE AND ADDED A FEW OF OUR OWN AND THEN ROTATED WHEN THE CONVERSATION CAME TO A LULL. WE DID SET SOME GROUND RULES AT THE BEGINNING WHICH I THINK IS A REALLY GOOD IDEA AND I WOULD RECOMMEND DOING. ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THIS BOOK, A LOT OF PEOPLE BROUGHT UP PERSONAL EXPERIENCES, CONNECTIONS TO THE STORY SO WE ESTABLISHED IT WAS A SAFE PLACE, ANYTHING BROUGHT UP SHOULD BE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL AND EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO CONTRIBUTE. SO JUST SPREADING THOSE GROUND RULES MADE THE CONVERSATION A NICE ONE AND THE HOUR WENT REALLY FAST. SO THAT WAS OUR FIRST BOOK CLUB, A BIG SUCCESS IN MY EYES, MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN I THOUGHT SO I WAS HAPPY ABOUT THAT. I EXPECTED TO DO ONE IN SPRING BUT MY SPRING GOT TOO BUSY SO THE NEXT BOOK CLUB WAS IN THE FALL ALSO IN OCTOBER AGAIN WE DID A DISPLAY OF GRAPHIC MEDICINE BOOKS AT THE NEW STUDENT ACTIVITIES FAIR AND THIS TIME I WAS HAVING A TOUGH TIME DECIDING WHICH TITLE TO DO NEXT. SO WE HAD A POLL, HAD THEM VOTE AND THE TOP VOTE-GETTER WAS MARBLES BY ELLEN FORNEY. THEN COMING IN SECOND, THE BAD DOCTOR AND THEN QUITE A BIT BEHIND THAT WERE OTHER TITLES AND ALL OF THESE BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE NER FROM BOOK KITS AND I WAS REALLY COUNTING ON USING THE BOOK CLUB TO SUPPLEMENT OUR COLLECTION SO THAT IS WHY WE SELECTED THOSE TITLES. SO MARBLES WAS THE WINNER AND I WAS EXCITED ABOUT THAT BECAUSE IT WAS A REALLY ENGAGING BOOK, I FOUND IT INTERESTING AND I REALLY THOUGHT IT WOULD ATTRACT PARTICIPANTS. HOWEVER, I DIDN’T FIND A STUDENT INTEREST GROUP ON THIS ONE, THERE WASN’T A NATURAL FIT SO I WAS A BIT DISAPPOINTED ON THAT. WE STILL PROMOTED IT. BUT DIDN’T HAVE THAT BUY IN WITH STUDENTS I THINK THERE WAS A LITTLE LESS NAME RECOGNITION OF THIS BOOK AS WELL AND IN THE END, I FEEL LIKE I PICKED A BAD TIME FOR THE BOOK CLUB WHEN THEY DIDN’T HAVE AN EXAM, DIDN’T HAVE A LOT GOING ON THAT WEEK BUT FAILED TO REALIZE IT WAS THE TUESDAY AFTER THEIR FAMILY AND PARENT WEEKEND WHICH HAD FOLLOWED THE WHITE COAT CEREMONY. SO IN RETROSPECT, I IMAGINE MANY STUDENTS WERE SPENDING TIME WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS THAT WEEKEND AND NOT READING A GRAPHIC NOVEL. SO LESSON LEARNED THERE. SO WE DID SIMILAR PROMOTION FOR MARBLES POSTERS, BLOG POST, SOCIAL MEDIA, IT DIDN’T GET PICKED UP AS MUCH. MAYBE THAT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE TURN OUT BUT IN THE END, THERE WAS THE SIMILAR FORMAT, PROVIDED COOKIES AND CIDER, HAD THE BOOK CLUB KIT AND WE HAVE ONE COPY OF THIS BOOK IN OUR COLLECTION BUT WE ONLY HAD MYSELF AND ONE OTHER LIBRARIAN SHOW UP TO THE EVENT. SO WE HAD THREE PATRONS WHO BORROWED BOOKS AND RSVP’D BUT IN THE END, SOMETHING CAME UP FOR EACH OF THEM. ONE WOMAN WAS HAVING A BABY, THE OTHER TWO HAD THINGS GOING ON SO THEY COULDN’T MAKE IT TO THE SESSION AND THAT WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTING. I THINK I DID LEARN SOME LESSONS FROM THE SUCCESSFUL AND LESS SUCCESSFUL BOOK CLUB SO I WOULD ENCOURAGE ANYONE TRYING TO DO THIS TO MAKE SURE YOU PARTNER WITH A GROUP OR PROGRAM OR DEPARTMENT FOR THE NEXT ONE JUST TO HAVE THAT COLLABORATION. TO GET INPUT ON SCHEDULING, MAYBE I NEED TO JUST THINK MORE ABOUT THE BROADER SCHEDULING AND NOT JUST THE MEDICAL STUDENTS SCHEDULE. ASKING FOR RSVP’S, EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT A SURE FIRE THAT THEY WILL SHOW UP, AT LEAST YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO REMIND THEM ABOUT THE EVENT. AND THEN LOOKING FOR TIES FROM YOUR LOCAL CURRICULUM OR LOCAL INTEREST OR CURRENT EVENTS. SO FUTURE PLANS, I DO PLAN TO RUN ANOTHER BOOK CLUB. WE ARE HOSTING THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE EXHIBIT HERE IN BURLINGTON IN MARCH AND APRIL SO I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO WHAT TORI HAS TO SAY ABOUT WHAT THEY DID BECAUSE I AM WORKING ON MY PROGRAMMING RIGHT NOW AND ALSO WORKING ON A SELECTING A BOOK FOR THE SPRING BOOK CLUB. ONE UNEXPECTED OUTCOME OF THE MARBLES BOOK CLUB EVEN THOUGH THE CLUB ITSELF WAS NOT THAT SUCCESSFUL, OUR PSYCHIATRY DIRECTOR SAW THE POSTER AND SAID HEY, I WAS THINKING ABOUT RUNNING THIS FOUR-WEEK ELECTIVE COURSE ON GRAPHIC MEDICINE AND PSYCHIATRY AND WOULD YOU LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH ME AND THAT WAS AN UNEXPECTED OUTCOME SO I AM WORKING WITH HIM AND THE FIRST CLASS SHOULD RUN IN IT APRIL AND ANOTHER IN DECEMBER SO THAT HAS TURNED INTO A REALLY EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR ME EVEN THOUGH THE BOOK CLUB ITSELF DIDN’T ATTRACT A LOT OF FOLKS. SO THAT IS WHAT I HAVE LEARNED SO FAR ABOUT BOOK CLUBS AND I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO LEARNING MORE ABOUT RUNNING NEW BOOK CLUBS WHEN WE DO OUR NEXT ONE IN A MONTH. SO MY E-MAIL IS HERE IF ANYONE WANT TO FOLLOW UP WITH ME AFTER THE FACT, I AM HAPPY TO CHAT WITH YOU ABOUT ANY OF MY EXPERIENCES. AND THEN JUST A FEW CREDITS.>>THANKS, JUST A QUICK REMINDER FOR FOLKS WHO MAY HAVE JOINED US A LITTLE BIT LATE, WE HAVE CURRENTLY 40 PEOPLE ON THE CALL SO WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO UNMUTE BUT IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, PUT THEM IN THE CHAT BOX AND REMEMBER TO SEND THEM TO ME OR ALL PARTICIPANTS. NEXT WE HAVE OUR TORI ROSSETTI ON THE NLM EXHIBIT, GRAPHIC MEDICINE ILL-CONCEIVED AND WELL-DRAWN PROGRAMMING THAT WAS DONE AT THE LAMAR SOUTTER LIBRARY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS MEDICAL SCHOOL.>>ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU. HI, EVERYONE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING TODAY. I AM TORI ROSSETTI, AN EDUCATIONAL AND CLINICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN AT UMASS MEDICAL SCHOOL AND TODAY I AM PLANNING TO SHARE WITH YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW WE CAME UP WITH PROGRAMMING TO GO WITH THE EXHIBIT AND TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT WE THOUGHT DID AND DIDN’T WORK FOR WHAT WE WERE DOING. ALL RIGHT, SO JUST A LITTLE BACKGROUND FOR PEOPLE WHO AREN’T FAMILIAR WITH IT. THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE ILL-CONCEIVED AND WELL-DRAWN EXHIBITION IS A COOL SET OF SIX POSTERS AND THEY ARE THERE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SLIDE, THAT ARE KIND OF THIS STANDALONE POSTERS. THEY WERE PRODUCED BY THE NLM AND CURATED BY ELLEN FORNEY. WHO WROTE MARBLES SHE ALSO JUST CAME OUT WITH A BOOK CALLED ROCK STEADY THE EXHIBIT WAS SCHEDULED TO COME — ACTUALLY ABOUT A YEAR BEFORE, WE KNEW IT WOULD BE WITH US SEPTEMBER THROUGH OCTOBER 2018. WE WERE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT HOSTING IT BUT WE WEREN’T SURE HOW TO REALLY KIND OF DO PROGRAMMING AROUND THESE POSTERS. WE DIDN’T WANT TO HAVE THE EXHIBIT COME IN AND THEN NOT DO ANYTHING WITH IT. SO WE KIND OF GOT TOGETHER AND ASKED OURSELVES HOW ARE WE GOING TO CONNECT THE EXHIBIT MEANINGFULLY TO EXISTING LIBRARY RESOURCES AND OUTREACH, DESIGN PROGRAMMING FOR THE EXHIBITION AND HOW DO WE GUIDE OR PLAN FOR HOW THE COMMUNITY IS GOING TO ENGAGE WITH THIS EXHIBIT. ALL RIGHT, THE FIRST THING WE KIND OF DID WAS REALLY TAKE STOCK OF OUR RESOURCES. YOU DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO TILL YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE SO ONE OF THE BIGGEST RESOURCES AND THE THING THAT WAS THE BIGGEST HELP WAS THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE TASK FORCE SO A BIG SHOUT OUT TO SARAH, TESS AND MARIANNE THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE TASK FORCE MEMBERS AND ALSO TO MARY, THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR AND JESSICA WHO REALLY PUT FORTH A TON OF IDEAS, LOTS OF ENERGY AND TIME. OTHER RESOURCES THAT WERE GOING TO BE SUPER-IMPORTANT, WE HAVE A GRAPHIC MEDICINE BOOK COLLECTION THAT WAS STARTED BY MATTHEW NOE WHILE HE WAS STILL HERE AND THAT WAS ABOUT 127 BOOKS SO WE HAD A LOT OF TITLES WORK WITH. SPACE WAS GOING TO BE A HUGE RESOURCE. WE HAVE ACCESS TO AMPHITHEATERS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL AND THE LIBRARY IS A NATURAL GATHERING PLACE. WE HAD A BUDGET AND THE SUPPORT OF ADMINISTRATORS AND MANAGERS. WE ALSO HAVE — THERE IS AN AMAZING ONLINE GRAPHIC MEDICINE COMMUNITY WHO WERE ENTHUSIASTIC AND WILLING TO SHARE AND GIVE US ADVICE AND WE WERE GIVEN TIME THE TIME TO TAKE OUT OF OUR REGULAR DAY-TO-DAY JOBS AND THINK ABOUT HOW WE WANT TO DO THIS. SO OUR AUDIENCE IS BROAD AND CAN BE TRICKY AND A BLESSING. WE HAVE MEDICAL NURSING AND GRADUATE SCHOOL BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE STUDENTS. THEY ARE ALL BUSY. WE HAVE FACULTY AND STAFF, ALSO BUSY. WE HAVE RESIDENTS, CLINICIANS AND NURSES AND, YOU GUESSED IT, THEY ARE ALSO BUSY. WE ALSO HAD MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC THROUGH OUTREACH INITIATIVES BOTH FROM NLM NER AND FROM SOME DIFFERENT MEMBERS OF THE LIBRARY, A STRONG CONNECTION WITH THE PUBLIC LIBRARY IN WORCESTER AND DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE THAT. SO WE REALLY JUST HAD A BROAD AUDIENCE TO KIND OF PICK AND CHOOSE WHO WE’RE GOING TO AIM THINGS AT. SO WE STARTED OFF BY THE GOALS WE WANTED TO FORM AROUND THIS EXHIBITION AND OUTCOMES WE WANTED TO SEE. ONE WAS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF OUR GRAPHIC MEDICINE BOOK COLLECTION. IT IS AN AWESOME COLLECTION. WE HAVE A BUDGET FOR IT WHICH IS AMAZING AND IS CONTINUING TO GROW AND THEN WE SAW INDICATORS OF THAT SUCCESS. IF THE STATS WENT UP DURING THE TIME THE EXHIBIT WAS THERE AND AFTER, IT GETS STUDENTS TO START THINKING ABOUT USING COMICS OR DRAWINGS TO PROCESS INFORMATION. WE WERE GOING TO USE INDICATORS FOR SUCCESS FOR USE OF COMICS IN EXISTING PERSONAL NARRATIVES GROUP, AND ACTUALLY THE LEADER OF THAT GROUP HAS STARTED SENDING ME GRAPHIC MEDICINE COMICS FROM A MEDICAL STUDENT BLOG THAT WAS SUCCESSFUL. AND THEN REALLY DEMONSTRATE TO THE POPULATION THE WAY COMICS CAN BE USED IN MEDICAL EDUCATION SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION AND HEALTH LITERACY AND THE INDICATOR OF THAT BEING SUCCESSFUL WOULD BE IF THE USE OF COMICS INCREASED IN THE CURRICULUM. SOME OF OUR GOALS WE KNEW WOULD BE EASY AND EASY TO MEASURE AND OTHERS WOULD BE MORE DIFFICULT SO IF I LOOK AT GOALS FOR NEXT TIME, WE WILL TRY TO SET MORE EASILY ATTAINABLE OR MEASURABLE GOALS. SO WE WENT ALL OUT ON BRAINSTORMING PROGRAMMING TO SAY WHAT CAN WE POSSIBLY DO? THIS LIST WAS ALL OF THE IDEAS WE CAME UP WITH IN OUR FIRST MEETINGS TOGETHER. YOU WILL SEE SOME THINGS ON THERE THAT DIDN’T MAKE IT IN THE FINAL THING BUT I WANTED TO INCLUDE THIS IN THE SLIDE SHOW BECAUSE I KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE TRYING TO CREATE PROGRAMS AND IF YOU SEE ANYTHING ON THIS LIST, YOU THINK YOU CAN USE, PLEASE STEAL IT LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT IT. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN, I WANTED TO DO A PICTIONARY PARTY WITH MEDICAL TOPICS AND THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN AND THEN I WANTED TO HAVE A COMICS JAM AND THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN. SO FOR THINGS THAT DID HAPPEN, WE WERE GOING TO INVITE SPEAKERS, AND AT THE END, WE LIMITED IT DOWN TO ONE SPEAKER BECAUSE THERE WERE SO MANY AMAZING PEOPLE WITH SO MUCH TO OFFER OUT THERE IN THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE WORLD. SO WE ENDED UP HAVING ONE PANEL AND ONE INDIVIDUAL AND I WILL TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THAT IN A MINUTE. WE ALSO DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING WE CALLED COFFEE AND COMIC WEDNESDAY. WE MADE THAT A DROP-IN COLORING ACTIVITY, LOW STRESS, TO KIND OF GET THE STUDENTS INTO THE SPACE, BE COLORING AND DRAWING AND JUST BE AROUND THE COLLECTION, THE BOOKS. AND THEN COLLECTION PROMOTION, DISPLAY, PROVOCATIVE COLORFUL TITLES FRONT AND CENTER SO AS SOON AS YOU WALK IN THE LIBRARY ON ONE SIDE YOU SEE THE EXHIBIT, THE OTHER, YOU SEE THE TITLES AND THEN TO TRY TO CONNECT TO THE CURRICULUM, REACH OUT TO EXISTING HUMANITIES AND MEDICINE FOLKS AND TRY TO CONNECT WITH THEM, SEE WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND HOW WE CAN CONNECT TO THAT. SO JUST A LITTLE OVERVIEW OF THINGS THAT WERE SUCCESSFUL AND THINGS THAT WERE NOT. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS REALLY SUCCESSFUL I WANT TO TALK ABOUT — THAT WAS OKAY. SO ANY TIME YOU OFFER STUDENT FREE COFFEE OR SNACKS, THEY WILL HEAR ABOUT IT, TELL THEIR FRIENDS AND IT WILL BE SUCCESSFUL. SO COFFEE WORKS, CONNECTING THROUGH CURRICULUM WORKS. SO FOR THE SINGLE SPEAKER, WE HAD MATTEO FARINELLA THE AUTHOR OF NEUROCOMICS AND SO HAPPENS THAT SOMEONE WAS TEACHING THAT IN THEIR CLASS SO THAT WAS A GREAT INTRO. FOR THE PANEL WE HAD MK CZERWIEC, DANA WALRATH, AND CATHY LEMY AND THEY DID AN AMAZING JOB ON THE PANEL. THAT WAS RECORDED SO IF ANYONE WANTS TO SEE IT, I WILL TRY TO SEND THE LINK AT THE END. I THINK THAT WAS AN ISSUE OF TIMING AND ALSO WE DIDN’T DO A GREAT JOB CONNECTING WITH A GROUP OF PEOPLE, KIND OF LIKE ALICE WAS SAYING, WE DIDN’T HAVE ANY STUDENT GROUPS OR CLASS GROUPS SO THE ATTENDANCE FOR THAT PARTICULAR PANEL WAS NOT AS HIGH. THE OTHER THING THAT WAS REALLY SUCCESSFUL WAS PROMOTING THE COLLECTION. I HAVE SOME STATISTICS FOR THAT ON THE NEXT SLIDE AND THEN WHAT DIDN’T REALLY WORK WAS BEING PASSIVE ABOUT THE PROGRAMMING. I THINK THAT I COULD HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB REALLY GOING OUT AND FINDING STAKEHOLDERS IN THE COMMUNITY, GETTING PEOPLE TO KIND OF PLEDGE TO COME AND PARTICIPATE, TALKING TO PEOPLE ABOUT WHAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT. EVERYONE UNDERSTOOD THE COFFEE PART OF COFFEE AND COMICS AND THE PART ABOUT THE COMICS I THINK WAS A LITTLE — PASSED OVER FOR THEM. ALL RIGHT, SO GO ON TO THE NEXT SLIDE. SO CIRCULATION BY THE NUMBERS, WE HAVE ABOUT 172 ITEMS IN OUR GRAPHIC MEDICAL BOOK COLLECTION AND AS YOU CAN KIND OF SEE, WE HAD SOME REAL HIGHS AND LOWS BUT EVERYTHING — IT KIND OF HOVERS AROUND ABOUT 15 AVERAGE A MONTH SO DURING OCTOBER, WE ENJOYED 50 KIND OF HITS WHICH INCLUDE SOFT CHECKOUT, RENEWALS, CHECKINS, ALL OF THOSE DIFFERENT STATISTICS. BOOKS WERE MOVING IN OCTOBER WHICH WAS THE MONTH THAT THE EXHIBIT HAD BEEN THERE FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND WAS THERE INTO ABOUT THE SECOND WEEK IN OCTOBER SO PEOPLE WERE REALLY — WE CAN ABSOLUTELY SAY THE EXHIBIT INCREASED THE CIRCULATION FOR US. SO I JUST WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT WE DID TO GET THE WORD OUT. SO ONE OF MY COMMITTEE MEMBERS REALLY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND. SHE CALLED PROBABLY 20 DIFFERENT BOOK STORES AND WE WERE ABLE TO GET POSTERS OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY TO INVITE PEOPLE TO BOTH THE PANEL IN TO SEE THE EXHIBIT. SO WE HAD EVENT POSTERS IN ABOUT TEN LOCAL BOOK STORES AND THAT INCLUDED NEARBY COLLEGE CAMPUSES. WE GOT POSTERS IN STUDENT LOUNGES, HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS, HAD A DISPLAY IN THE GLASS CASE OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY SO IF YOU WALKED UP TO THE LIBRARY, THERE WAS NO MISTAKE ABOUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THE SPACE OF THAT TIME. THE OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS GOT ONBOARD AND KIND OF GOT THE WORD OUT. IT WAS IN OUR STUDENT NEWSLETTER. WE PUT IT ON TWITTER. THERE WERE LIBRARY WEBSITE ANNOUNCEMENTS. WE E-MAILED IT TO EVERYONE WE COULD THINK OF PROBABLY THREE TIMES AND SORRY, BUT WE WERE GOING FOR SATURATION WE ATTENDED THE STUDENT ACTIVITY FAIR WHAT WAS GREAT WAS SO I BROUGHT IN THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE BOOKS IN WITH ME AND SEEING THE FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS WHO HAD BEEN THERE FOR ABOUT A WEEK, IT WAS GREAT TO SEE THEM OPEN THE BOOKS UP AND WANT TO TALK ABOUT THEM. REALLY EXCITING TO ME. AND WHAT WAS GREAT, TOO, WAS THEY SAID OH YEAH, I SAW YOUR POSTER IN THE LOUNGE. SO I FELT LIKE THEY WERE GETTING THE EXPOSURE AND THEN WE GAVE THEM SPACE TO TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENT THINGS WE WANTED TO DO. WE CONTACTED LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS, WORD OF MOUTH, THE COMICS AND MEDICINE CONFERENCE IN VERMONT WITH THE EXHIBIT AND WHAT WE WERE GOING TO DO ABOUT THAT. SO I PROMISED YOU SOME LINKS TO SOME DIFFERENT THINGS. SO WHEN I DID THIS PANEL WITH MK, KATHY AND DANA, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THEY REALLY LIKED WAS THE LIST OF QUESTIONS I CAME UP TO ASK THEM. WE DIDN’T GET THROUGH ALL OF THEM. I THINK I WROTE LIKE 30 OR 40 QUESTIONS AND WE ONLY GOT TO ASK ABOUT 15 OF THEM. SO I WOULD LOVE FOR EVERYONE THAT WANTS TO USE THEM TO GO AHEAD AND USE THAT. WE HAVE THE ACTUAL PANEL ITSELF AND I AM GOING TO HAVE TO CHECK TO SEE WHETHER IT WAS RECORDED, AND IF MATEO WAS, I WILL FIND A WAY TO GET THAT TO PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN IT AND THEN I INCLUDED THE COFFEE AND COMIC PROMPTS IN CASE YOU HAVE MORE SUCCESS WITH IT THAN WE DID. ALL RIGHT, SO HERE IS MY CONTACT INFORMATION, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REACH OUT TO ME, ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT THINK OF, MY E-MAIL AND TWITTER THERE. AND THAT IS PRETTY MUCH ALL I HAD FOR YOU.>>SO I COULD MAKE THESE SLIDES AVAILABLE ONCE WE ARE DONE SO IF YOU WERE FURIOUSLY SCRIBBLING TO TRY TO GET ANY OF THOSE LINKS OR E-MAIL ADDRESSES DOWN NOW WE HAVE SOME TIME, 20 MINUTES OR SO, FOR QUESTION AND ANSWERS. THESE ARE SOME QUESTIONS I WAS THINKING ABOUT BUT FEEL FREE TO THROW ANY OTHER QUESTIONS IN THE CHAT BOX THAT WOULD HELP YOU GET STARTED IN GRAPHIC MEDICINE AND THEN WE HAVE ALICE AND TORI HERE TO ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS. AND SO UNTIL I SEE SOMETHING IN THE CHAT BOX, I AM JUST GOING TO ASK. YOU GUYS READY?>>YES.>>SO ONE OF THE THINGS I HEARD FROM THE BOTH OF YOU WAS WHAT REALLY WORKED WAS HAVING PARTNERS. BUT WHAT DIDN’T QUITE WORK WAS THAT SOMETIMES PEOPLE SORT OF NEEDED A LITTLE HAND-HOLDING, THEY DIDN’T REALLY MAYBE UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS GOING ON, THAT THIS WAS OUTSIDE OF THEIR NORMAL — WHAT THEY WERE DOING. SO WITH YOUR PARTNERS, DID THAT APPLY TO THE PARTNERS AS WELL, DID YOU HAVE TO DO HANDHOLDING TO GET PEOPLE INVOLVED AND WHAT DID THAT LOOK LIKE AND HOW DID YOU WORK THEM THROUGH THE PROCESS OF THIS IS WHY WE’RE WORKING WITH YOU, THIS IS WHAT WE WANT TO DO, THINGS LIKE THAT?>>THIS IS ALICE. I WOULD SAY IT WAS A REALLY NATURAL FIT WITH THE PARTICULAR PARTNER GROUPS THAT I HAD. AS SOON AS I SUGGESTED THE IDEA OF THE BOOK CLUB TO THEM AND THE TITLE FUN HOME, THEY WERE ALL OVER IT. I THINK IT REALLY HELPED. THIS IS ONE OF THE BETTER-KNOWN GRAPHIC NOVELS AND THERE WAS A LOT OF CURRENT AWARENESS OF IT SO IN THAT SENSE, IT JUST MADE IT REALLY EASY. BUT I THINK FOR THE NEXT TITLE, MY GUESS IS IT WILL BE A LITTLE MORE OF A STRETCH WITH WHATEVER PARTNERS AND WE WILL PROBABLY NEED TO DO A LITTLE MORE OUTREACH AND PROACTIVE EXPLAINING OF THE CONCEPTS AND WHAT THE TIE-IN FOR THEM WILL BE. SO I DEFINITELY AM THINKING ABOUT THAT, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I DIDN’T FIND THE NATURAL FIT FOR MARBLES AND NOW I THINK OH, I PROBABLY COULD HAVE STRETCHED A LITTLE MORE TO FIND A NATURAL PARTNER FOR THAT. SO I THINK IT IS REALLY WORTH LAYING THE GROUNDWORK AND I THINK GENERALLY PEOPLE DO FIND THESE TOPICS EXCITING AND THE FORMAT ENGAGING SO I THINK WITH GROUNDWORK, YOU COULD PROBABLY GET MORE INTEREST.>>YEAH, SO AT UMASS WE DID A LOT OF PLANNING FOR MATTEO’S DISCUSSION, SHE IS THE LIAISON FOR THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES SO THE GROUND WORK WAS ALREADY LAID THERE. AND THEN ONCE WE FOUND OUT IT WAS BEING TAUGHT IN SOMEONE’S COURSE, NEUROCOMIC IS ON OUR RESERVE SHELF, WE HAD A REALLY EASY TIME OF WORKING WITH THE FACULTY MEMBER TO TURN THAT INTO THE TIME THAT MATTEO WAS GOING TO VISIT. I DON’T KNOW IF THAT WAS BECAUSE THE FACULTY MEMBER WASN’T GOING TO BE THERE ANY WAY BUT EITHER WAY, IT WORKED OUT WELL AND THEY DIDN’T REQUIRE ANY CONVINCING. IT WAS ALL ABOUT HAVING MATTEO COME IN AND THEN EVEN STAY AFTER FOR A CAREER CHAT WITH THE STUDENTS. SO THAT PROGRAM TURNED OUT TO BE VERY RICH FOR A POPULATION OF STUDENTS THAT ACTUALLY USUALLY FEEL ISOLATED, SO THAT WAS GREAT.>>SO IN THE CHAT BOX, WE HAD A COLLECTION MANAGEMENT QUESTION AS WELL. THERE IS A QUESTION ABOUT ARE THERE ANY VENDORS THAT ARE GOOD FOR GRAPHIC MEDICINE COLLECTION OR ARE THERE ANY PURCHASE PLANS THAT MIGHT BE AVAILABLE TO HELP PEOPLE BUILD COLLECTIONS?>>SO FOR US AT UMASS, WHAT I USUALLY DO, I MENTIONED BEFORE I WAS USING ONLINE GRAPHIC COMMUNITY. WHAT I WILL USUALLY DO IS START AT THE — WHAT IS THE WEBSITE, THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE WEBSITE?>>GRAPHICMEDICINE.ORG.>>YES, THEY OFFER BOOK REVIEWS, THANK YOU, ALICE. ALICE JAGGERS AND MATHEW NOE ARE WORKING ON A LIST AND THAT IS ONGOING AND I AM SORRY IF I DON’T HAVE THE EXACT DETAILS ABOUT THAT. WE ACTUALLY JUST MAINTAINED A SPREADSHEET OF WHAT WE WOULD LIKE ORDERED AND AMAZON LINK AND THAT IS HOW WE DEVELOPED OUR COLLECTION. SOME OF THESE BOOKS ARE PUBLISHED ONLY FROM SMALL PRESSES SO YOU HAVE TO ORDER THEM DIRECTLY FROM THE PUBLISHER AND SOME ARE DIFFICULT TO FIND AFTER THE FACT BUT IF YOU ARE KEEPING UP WITH THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE TWITTERVERSE, THEY WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN THEY ARE READY FOR ORDERING AND YOU CAN DO THAT RIGHT AWAY OR FIND THE LINK FOR LATER.>>FOR US, WE ACTUALLY GOT A LIST FROM MATHEW WHICH WAS GREAT WITH JUST HIS SUGGESTIONS AND THEN I WENT THROUGH THAT AND SELECTED THE ONES THAT SEEMED THE MOST RELEVANT TO OUR NEEDS AND BUDGET LIMITATIONS AND THEN I HAD 15 TO BUY AND FROM THERE I HAVE BEEN SLOWLY ADDING. WE PURCHASED ROCK STEADY WHICH ELLEN FORNEY’S SECOND BOOK AND SO WE’RE SLOWLY BUILDING ONE OR TWO HERE AND JUST BEEN BUYING THEM THROUGH AMAZON OR WHENEVER THEY ARE AVAILABLE SO IT IS PRETTY AD HOC AT THE MOMENT.>>SO IT LOOKS LIKE THERE IS SOME ISSUE WITH SENDING TO ALL PARTICIPANTS AND I WANTED TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT IN THE CHAT BOX, MATHEW MADE A COMMENT, AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF CORE TITLES FROM AN ALA CARNEGIE-WHITNEY GRANT. THERE’S AN OLD LIST THAT MATHEW CREATED I HAVE AT NER, HE DID THE ORIGINAL WEBINAR AND THEN THERE IS ALSO A LINK THAT I WILL PUT UP. SO THERE WAS A QUESTION IN THE CHAT BOX SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU ABOUT THE PERSONAL NARRATIVE GROUP HERE AT UMASS.>>SO ONE OF OUR CLINICIANS RUNS A PERSONAL NARRATIVE GROUP AND RUNS IT ESSENTIALLY AS — HE HAS A LISTSERV AND PEOPLE IF THEY WANT TO CONTRIBUTE, WILL SEND HIM THE NARRATIVES THEY WANT TO SHARE AND HE WILL THEN SEND IT OUT AS KIND OF A COLLECTED GROUP OF STORIES AND THAT IS ALL PRIVATE WITHIN UMASS. SO I DON’T KNOW THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO SHARE THAT BUT IT IS — WE DO HAVE THIS CLINICIAN THAT IS ALREADY DOING THINGS WITH PERSONAL NARRATIVES AS A WRITING THING AND OFFER — I THINK HE OFFERED EITHER AN FCE WHICH IS A FLEXIBLE EXPERIENCE OR JUST A GROUP THAT CAN JUST WRITE. I REALLY WOULD LOVE TO — HARNESS OF THAT ENERGY, GET IT DIRECTED TOWARDS GRAPHIC MEDICINE AT SOME POINT. HOPE THAT ANSWERS THE QUESTION AND PLEASE LET US KNOW IF IT DIDN’T.>>SO THERE IS A LINK IN THE CHAT BOX FOR A GOOGLE DOC, A SPREADSHEET THAT IS THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE DATABASE THAT ALICE JAGGERS IS WORKING ON AND UPDATING SO JUST SO PEOPLE ARE AWARE, THAT IS WHERE THAT GOOGLE LINK SENDS YOU. SO ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS AS YOU WERE BOTH SPEAKING I WAS THINKING ABOUT IS WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT AND MONEY COMMITMENT YOU PUT IN TO THESE PROGRAMS?>>ALICE, YOU WANT TO GO?>>SURE, I AM JUST THINKING. I WOULD SAY FOR ME SO FAR, NOT AN ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF EITHER. YOU KNOW, KIND OF CONCENTRATED TIME, COMMITMENT WHEN WE WERE SELECTING THE BOOKS AND ORDERING THEM AND GETTING THEM CATALOGED AND THEN AROUND EACH BOOK CLUB AND OTHER THAN THAT, THE COLLECTION, YOU KNOW, JUST KIND OF RUNS ITSELF. AND I DON’T HAVE A FIGURE OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD BUT A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS? I MEAN, WE ARE REALLY PRETTY CONSTRICTED IN OUR COLLECTIONS BUDGET SO IT IS A PRETTY SMALL AMOUNT OF MONEY WE SPENT ON THIS. SO I WOULD SAY FOR ME IT HAS BEEN FUN AND EXCITING AND SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND IN SOME WAY, TO KIND OF PUT ON A READERS ADVISORY MORE PUBLIC LIBRARY HAT WHICH IS FUN AND A LITTLE MORE DIFFERENT THAN THE MEDLINE SEARCHING THAT I DO SO MUCH OF MY DAY. SO THAT HAS BEEN REALLY NICE BUT FOR ME, IT HAS NOT BEEN A HUGE TIME COMMITMENT AND I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIT IT INTO MY WORKLOAD PRETTY EASILY.>>SO I THINK THE EXHIBIT IS JUST A LITTLE DIFFERENT BECAUSE YOU KNOW IT’S COMING — I WOULD SAY WE REALLY STARTED, GOT DOWN TO PLANNING IT, PROBABLY 5 MONTHS BEFORE IT WAS DUE TO ARRIVE. THE COMMITTEE MET PROBABLY ONCE A MONTH BEFORE IT CAME AND THEN THE TIME COMMITMENT RAMPED UP A LITTLE BIT DIRECTLY BEFORE IT CAME. I WAS THERE PROBABLY SPENDING TWO OR THREE HOURS A DAY, LIKE THE WEEK BEFORE THE EXHIBIT CAME, FINALIZING, COORDINATING WITH SPEAKERS, FINALIZING ALL OF THE BROCHURES AND POSTERS AND WRITING THE ANNOUNCEMENTS THAT WERE GOING TO GO OUT, CONTACTING LISTSERV AND AGAIN, I HAD A GREAT GROUP I WAS WORKING WITH TO SPLIT THAT UP. PEOPLE WERE CONTACTING PEOPLE THAT THEY HAD RELATIONSHIPS WITH. SO THE TIME COMMITMENT FOR THIS GRAPHIC MEDICINE EXHIBIT REALLY WAS STEADY AT THE BEGINNING, RAMPED UP BEFORE WE DID IT, THEN IT WAS PROBABLY A MATTER OF THREE OR FOUR HOURS A WEEK WHILE THE EXHIBIT WAS THERE JUST BECAUSE I DID THE WEEKLY WEDNESDAY COFFEE AND COMICS AND THEN THE TIME AROUND THE SPEAKERS, THAT WAS PROBABLY ANOTHER THREE OR FOUR HOURS FOR EACH OF THE DAYS THEY WERE THERE. FOR MONEY, FUNDING WAS A REALLY NEBULOUS TOPIC FOR US. WE WERE TOLD THERE WAS A BUDGET. WE WEREN’T TOLD WHAT REALLY THE CEILING WAS. WE WOULD SAY IS IT OKAY TO SPEND THIS AND WE WOULD GET A YES AND SO THEN WE WOULD GO BACK AND SAY WELL, IS IT OKAY TO SPEND THIS AND WE WOULD GET A YES. SO I THINK AT THE END, YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY PAY THE SPEAKERS FAIRLY, I DON’T HAVE A FINAL NUMBER ON THAT BUT WE DID PAY A FEE FOR THEM TO COME AND THEN FOR THEIR TRAVEL AND DAILY EXPENSES. AND THEN THE COST OF THE EXHIBIT ITSELF WAS JUST SHIPPING, I BELIEVE.>>SO YES?>>SO MATHEW IN THE CHAT BOX, THE GOOD WAY TO PITCH A SMALL COLLECTION FOR GRAPHIC MEDICINE IS THAT 15 COMICS IS ABOUT THE COST OF A MEDICAL TEXT BOOK, IT IS A GOOD POINT TO MAKE THAT THEY ARE NOT COMING FROM OBSCURE IMPRINTS, THAT YOU CAN BUY THEM THROUGH NORMAL COLLECTION MANAGEMENT MEANS.>>ARE THERE ANY RESOURCES THAT YOU USED TO SUPPORT THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE WORK, EITHER THE COLLECTIONS THAT YOU USED OR THE PROGRAMMING IN TERMS OF, YOU KNOW, THIS IS ONE PERSON’S STORY, HOW DO WE SORT OF BUILD AROUND THAT?>>ONE OF THE RESOURCES THAT I DEFINITELY USE THAT I ALREADY MENTIONED WAS GRAPHICMEDICINE.ORG. AND ANOTHER THING THAT WAS AWESOME WAS GOING TO THE COMICS AND MEDICINE CONFERENCE IN VERMONT AND THERE WAS JUST A WEALTH OF INFORMATION THERE FOR IT. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME BECAUSE I CAN’T TRAVEL INTERNATIONALLY, THERE IS ONE IN BRITON, UK WHICH IS AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN TRAVEL INTERNATIONALLY. IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO TO THAT CONFERENCE, I WOULD SUGGEST YOU GO. THE ARRAY OF — I CAN’T UNDERSTATE HOW IMPORTANT THE PEOPLE WHO LIKE COMICS IN MEDICINE ARE AS A RESOURCE. THEY ARE REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT.>>YEAH, AND I WOULD REITERATE, I WOULD SECOND THAT, THAT WEBSITE HAS SO MUCH INFORMATION AND THEN JUST HAVING THE NER BOOK CLUB KIT, IT IS A GREAT RESOURCE BECAUSE THEY REVIEW THE BOOKS AND THEN HAVE SOME SUGGESTED DISCUSSION QUESTIONS WHICH IS REALLY NICE AND THEN SOME MEDLINEPLUS MATERIALS. WHICH FOR MY POPULATION MAYBE WAS NOT QUITE SO RELEVANT BUT CERTAINLY IF YOU WERE DOING THIS AT A PUBLIC LIBRARY OR DIFFERENT LIBRARY, THESE WOULD BE REALLY NICE TO HAND OUT. WORKING WITH THE MEDICAL STUDENTS, THEY WERE LOOKING AT IT FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE THAN FROM A CONSUMER PERSPECTIVE.>>MATHEW NOE ALSO DOES A WEEKLY E-MAIL “THIS WEEK IN GRAPHIC MEDICINE.” SO IF YOU ARE JUST KIND OF LOOKING FOR THINGS THAT PEOPLE SENT HIM, THAT HE BECOMES AWARE OF, HE PUTS IN THIS WEEKLY ROUNDUP AND THAT ALSO GETS POSTED ON GRAPHICMEDICINE.ORG.>>SO THE GRAPHIC MEDICINE BOOK CLUB KITS HAVE BEEN MENTIONED A COUPLE OF TIMES AND MATHEW NOE STARTED THEM WHEN HE WAS HERE, WE ARE CONTINUING TO SEND OUT THE OUT. IF YOU ARE IN THE NEW ENGLAND REGION, I AM HAPPY TO SEND THEM OUT AND IF YOU ARE NOT IN NEW ENGLAND I AM HAPPY TO SHARE WHAT WE INCLUDE IN THEM AS A WAY TO START THINKING ABOUT RUNNING SOME BOOK CLUB KITS, THINGS LIKE THAT.>>SARAH DID NOT ASK ME TO PLUG THOSE SO MUCH, JUST THAT THEY WERE GREAT.>>SO WE HAVE TWO QUESTIONS THAT SEEM TO BE RELATED SO I THINK THEY WILL MAKE A GOOD STOPPING POINT. RESOURCES FOR INTERPROFESSIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES AND THEN WORKING WITH NEW CAREER CLINICIANS WITH THESE MATERIALS, ANY THOUGHTS? AVAILABLE RESOURCES?>>IF YOU ARE TRYING TO REACH OUT TO MID-CAREER CLINICIANS, THERE’S — IT DEPENDS ON WHO YOU… WHO IS IT AT PITT THAT WRITES THE CURRICULUM.>>WE MAY HAVE TO DIG THIS UP –>>I COULD ANSWER THIS BUT I DON’T HAVE MY NOTES WITH ME.>>SO TORI HAS A SUGGESTION BUT SHE WILL HAVE TO DIG UP THE LINK AND EVERYTHING. THIS IS BEING RECORDED AND EVERYBODY WHO IS REGISTERED WILL GET AN E-MAIL WHEN THE RECORDING GOES UP AND IT WILL INCLUDE ANYTHING ELSE THAT WE CAN THINK OF FOR SOME OF THESE THINGS. ALICE, ANY THOUGHTS ABOUT WORKING WITH OTHER POPULATIONS OR MID-CAREER CLINICIANS?>>YOU KNOW, I DON’T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THAT YET, ALTHOUGH I DID MENTION A COURSE THAT I AM COLLABORATING ON AND THE PERSON LEADING THAT IS THE CLERKSHIP DIRECTOR OF PSYCHIATRY HERE. SO I HAVE HAD SOME CONVERSATIONS WITH HIM AND HE CERTAINLY IS VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS SO I CERTAINLY THINK THERE IS AN AUDIENCE AMONG CLINICIANS FOR THESE TITLES. IT IS JUST FIGURING HOW TO REACH THEM OR WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT OR ACTIVITIES MIGHT REALLY WORK FOR THEM. SO I DON’T THINK I HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH IT YET BUT I THINK THE AUDIENCE IS THERE, AS WELL AS A GENERAL AUDIENCE FOR PUBLIC LIBRARIES TO DO THIS. I THINK THESE WORKS REALLY SPEAK TO SUCH PERSONAL EXPERIENCES, I THINK THEY HAVE SUCH A BROAD APPEAL.>>BUT I WILL ALSO SECOND THAT, IN THAT WE HAVE SENT THE BOOK CLUB KIT OUT TO ACADEMIC MEDICAL LIBRARIES BUT ALSO TO PUBLIC LIBRARIES, TO TEEN GROUPS, PUBLIC HEALTH, COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND THEY HAVE ALL FOUND WAYS TO USE THEM BUT THEY ARE DIFFERENT POPULATIONS. AND EACH POPULATION GETS A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THING OUT OF IT BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT ISSUES THAT AFFECT PRETTY MUCH EVERYBODY, DEPENDING ON THE TOPIC OF THE BOOK, THERE IS AN AUDIENCE FOR IT OUTSIDE OF ACADEMICS THAT WE HAVE MOSTLY BEEN FOCUSED ON HERE.>>AND I AM IN NURSING IN OUR HOSPITAL AND HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT WAYS TO DESIGN A PROGRAM THAT MIGHT REACH OUT TO NURSES. SO IF ANYBODY ELSE HAS EXPERIENCE DOING THAT, I WOULD BE CURIOUS TO HEAR HOW IT HAS GONE FOR YOU.>>SO I THINK WE ARE COMING TO THE END OF OUR SESSION HERE TODAY. I THREW IN — THERE WE GO, THREW IN TWO SLIDES ABOUT MEDLINEPLUS BECAUSE THERE IS A NEED FOR SUPPORTING SOME INFORMATION WITH SORT OF THE BEST PRACTICES OF MEDICAL WE’RE TALKING ABOUT, PEOPLE’S PERSONAL EXPERIENCES AND THEN BUILDING AROUND THAT SO A REMINDER IF YOU ARE AWARE OF THE MEDLINEPLUS, IT IS THERE FOR YOU FOR HEALTH INFORMATION NEEDS AND IF YOU HAVE POPULATIONS THAT MIGHT NEED INFORMATION IN OTHER LANGUAGES, IT IS ALSO THERE AS WELL. SO THAT IS ALL I HAVE FOR FOLKS TODAY. ONCE YOU CLOSE OUT OF THE PRESENTATION, THERE WILL BE A FEEDBACK SURVEY. WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS. AND LIKE I SAID, THE PRESENTATION HAS BEEN RECORDED AND SO ONCE IT IS UP ONLINE, THAT LINK WILL BE SENT TO YOU AS WELL AS ANY OTHER INFORMATION, THE SLIDES AND ANY FOLLOW UP LINKS. THANK YOU
