Doctor with ties to Dana-Farber, Harvard Medical wins Nobel Prize

OR SNEEZE. STAY HOME WHEN YOU ARE SICK, AND
KEEP THE KIDS HOME WHEN THEY’RE
SICK. AND LASTLY, CALL YOUR DOCTOR
RIGHT AWAY IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE
THE FLU. EMILY: YOU’RE LOOKING AT THE
DISCOVERY THAT EARNED A LOCAL
RESEARCHER THE NOBEL PRIZE IN
MEDICINE TODAY. THIS PROCESS SHOWS HOW CELLS
SENSE OXYGEN LEVELS IN YOUR BODY
AND ADAPT, WITHOUT YOU EVEN
KNOWING IT. IT’S BEEN LONG ROAD FOR D
WILLIAM KAELIN,
LEADING TO A PHONE CALL EARLY
THIS MORNING THAT MADE IT ALL
WORTH IT. THE APPLAUSE NOW FOLLOWS D
KAELIN
FROM ROOM TO ROOM TO ROOM.>>I DID OCCASIONALLY ALLOW
WILL MYSELF TO DREAM THAT MAYBE

RECOGNITION WITHOUT CAROLYN. EMILY: AT THE TIME, DR. CAROLYN
KAELIN WAS A BELOVED SURGEON WHO
DIRECTED THE COMPREHENSIVE
BREAST HEALTH CENTER AT BRIGHAM
AND WOMEN’S HOSPITAL. SHE WAS MY BEST FRIEND AND HERO
AND PARTNER IN EVERYTHING I DID. BUT I’M AT A POINT NOW WHERE I
LIKE TO THINK SHE’S SMILING DOWN
AND NODDING, AND SAYING I TOLD
YOU, I TOLD YOU THIS WAS GOING
TO HAPPEN. EMILY: THEIR SON TRIPP AGREES,
HIS MOM WOULD HAVE BEEN
THRILLED.>>WE WE WERE ALWAYS AMAZED BY
THE KIND OF CAREERS THEY WERE
ABLE TO LEAD, BUT EVEN MORE THAN
THAT, WE’VE BEEN AMAZED AT THE
KIND OF PARENTS THEY’VE BEEN
ABLE TO
