Humanities Distinction Track at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine

The Humanities Distinction Track provides
you with the opportunity to explore your interest in the humanities, either creative or scholarly,
within the structure of a long-term, mentored, program while still satisfying all the requirements
of a rigorous medical curriculum. Hi, my name is Mgbechi Erondu, and I’m currently a first year in the MFA program at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. I just completed my third year at Iowa as a medical student. I remember when I first applied to Iowa one of the things that stood out to me was the Humanities Distinction Track. I was hoping to continue writing while I was in medical school and it was exciting to see that Iowa had that opportunity for me. As soon as I was admitted I said yes, I’m also going to be doing I’m also going to be doing the Humanities Distinction Track if possible. Humanities Distinction Track students have
completed novels, memoirs, poetry collections, scholarly writing projects, as well as projects centered around photography, empirical research, technology and medicine and many more. I think that’s really transformed how I look at myself. As a person it’s given me more confidence as a writer, but it’s also given me more confidence as a person who wants to be a physician, a healer. To satisfy the requirements of the Humanities Distinction Track you’ll write a proposal
for your project, identify a mentor, and complete 2 semesters of humanities electives. Beyond
that, you must complete a work that’s ready to present publically. Whether that’s submission
of scholarly work for publication, a showing in an art gallery, a reading of your creative
work all depends on the project itself. The Humanities Distinction track pairs your
passion with the tools you need to bring your vision to life. It’s yet another answer
to the question: Why Iowa?
