Jodie Whittaker’s First Stunt | Doctor Who: Series 11

This is a brand new experience for me. I think I’ve maybe done two jobs before
that required any kind of stunt so it’s gonna be ace. Can’t wait. By the end of episode one I thought I really want
something that was physical for the new Doctor. That actually she had a big action
adventure moment and I thought well, of course the thing you’d love
to do would be a massive scene that’s at night on top of cranes. Chris’s vision was like ridiculously bombastic. We did actually build a full size tower crane. Just so it didn’t feel kind of fake, you know? You can tell a green screen shot straight away as
soon as you see it. I’m very pleased with it actually. How are you with machinery and heights? The great thing about Jamie is we just storyboarded
it incredibly rigorously beforehand so he did some storyboards, we sat down together, we went through them frame by frame
and shot by shot. It was quite a technically challenging shoot so a lot of the prep time went into just working
out physically how we could do that. We had wirework for the moments where the Doctor
was jumping between the two cranes, we had camera cranes, we had smoke
and it was incredibly complex. It was very slippy and really rainy and windy and so it wasn’t necessarily the crane that was
the nerve-racking thing it was the elements as well. Yep, way too high. The bit that I was most nervous about,
even though I was on a wire, was jumping between the cranes. And for most of the takes there was
loads of crash mats, it was absolutely fine, but then on the huge wide
they had to take the crash mats away. I did the jump and I was really brave but it
was the climbing back – swinging back down into first position. I lost it and I was like ‘Oh! Ahhh!’
I was just really scared. I was really scared. There’s no easing in, it’s just go. You know, that’s it. That’s how movie making is. You turn up on the day and you shoot and
you get that one shot and if you don’t do it right you don’t get another chance. One of the main things that made me
so excited about doing this job was how different and a world away from
everything I’ve done before. Oh my God.

If Jodie has to do fight scenes like with the 3rd Doctor's Venusian martial arts, I imagine that would be more challenging. This stunt for her first Doctor Who story is indeed quite respectable. 👏🏻

My hope is that Jodi will be around longer than three seasons. It just never feels like enough, especially with the constant hiatuses. I understand that previous Doctors were around shorter, but so far, the Tenth Doctor is the only new Who Doctor with more than two sets of companions who aren’t one-offs.

They should bring back Sophie Aldred as Ace for an episode as Jodie seems to love saying ACE a lot. Not to mention Sophie is taking part in the Class audio adventures as Ace.

Having done jumps like this, I know it's still unnerving even on a wire. Not only did she make the jump but she flailed beautifully and made it a real action shot. Just for the record, I've done it blindfolded; eight feet. Just wanted to toot my own horn but bravo to the Doctor for a great stunt well done!

    who-what-videos-maybe October 12, 2018

I'm still not over the line that came with that job, just the side comment of her legs used to be longer since well Capaldi is taller than Jodie, it just felt so quintessential Doctor Who, just the off the cuff "I had a different body less than 24 hours ago, I'm still not used to this body's height proportions ahhhh" sort of thing, I love it soo much

  47. Bub Watson
    Bub Watson October 12, 2018

For God's sake, don't call it a stunt. It was lame, and looking at these people thinking they have achieved something pheominal only makes it lamer.

  60. ingenfare
    ingenfare October 13, 2018

It was fun but I remember that I thought it seemed fake because of all the different cuts. I would have loved it as one scene or with a zoom out at the jump point so that it looked like she actually did the jump. But thats just my thoughts. A lot of good shots in the episodes. BBC has nothing to fear from HBO when they produce such good quality.

  61. Hagen von Eitzen
Hagen von Eitzen October 13, 2018
