The Check In: Prescription Drug Prices

-President Trump claimed
he would be able to fix an issue that both Democrats and
Republicans can agree on — the skyrocketing cost
of prescription drugs. But while one party has a plan,
the other party — well, they have Trump. For more,
this is “The Check-in.” [ Applause ] [ Bell dings ] For years, prescription drug
prices in this country have been soaring,
largely because our government, for the most part,
does not negotiate the price of medication.
That means pharmaceutical companies can
charge whatever they want. Things have gotten so bad
that some Americans are forced to go abroad to get lifesaving
medication, like insulin. And one of those destinations
abroad is fairly ironic. -Robin is headed
to the Mexican border, where we meet a group
that saw her post on Instagram about insulin in Tijuana costing
a fraction of what it does in the U.S.,
-Just across the border. you’re just typing “pharmacy”
into Google Maps, and then off we go?
-And then off we go. -They’ve decide
it’s worth the risk to go to one of Mexico’s
most dangerous cities as insulin prices in the U.S. have more than doubled
in recent years. -So, that’s where we are,
as a country, right now. Trump is trying to build a wall to prevent outsiders
from coming in, while Americans are forced
to cross the border into Mexico just to get
affordable medication. So, hey, if Mexico
won’t pay for the wall, maybe Pfizer will.
[ Laughter ] Now, several…
[ Cheers and applause ] Several prominent Democrats,
like Senator Bernie Sanders, have been introducing
legislation that would cut
prescription drug prices by allowing Medicare
to negotiate directly with pharmaceutical companies. Sanders was asked about
his plans to reduce costs at a town hall yesterday.
-How do you plan to ensure the cost of medications,
like insulin, won’t continue to rise,
now “people over profit” will, hopefully, become
the norm in this country? -Oh, you’re asking me
a question that I have worked on
for a long, long time. [ Laughter and applause ]
-Yes, sir. -Don’t get me going.
-You know, I… [ Laughter ] -I like how
even Bernie Sanders knows not to get him going
on healthcare. I’m sure, at every dinner party
he’s invited to, the host says
to the other guests, “Bernie is coming, [Whispering] so
don’t mention healthcare.” [ Laughter ]
Now, part of the reason Democrats have to keep
reintroducing legislation to lower drug costs is
because President Trump still hasn’t fulfilled
his promises on this issue. Just last year,
he stood in the Rose Garden, surrounded by cabinet members
and Republican lawmakers, and vowed to lower costs
by going after those who have personally benefited
from higher drug prices. -We’re going to take on one of the biggest obstacles
to affordable medicine — The tangled web
of special interests. Not too many are sitting here
today, but they used to be here
all the time. -A nice sentiment,
but, unfortunately, most of the people there do take
massive campaign donations from pharmaceutical companies. They are the special interests. Are you having trouble
seeing them? If so, maybe it’s time you asked
your doctor about Lotemax. [ Laughter ]
Lotemax — so you can clearly see that
you’re full of [Bleep]. [ Laughter ]
By the way — [ Cheers and applause ] By the way,
are you full of [Bleep]? If so, ask your doctor
about Dulcolax. [ Laughter ] Now, to be fair,
politicians in both parties have willingly taken money
from drug companies for years. But now Trump is in charge,
and mere months after his announcement
about reducing drug costs, he boldly proclaimed
that he had succeeded. -Every day is, “Promises made,
promises kept.” [ Cheers and applause ]
We’ve taken bold action to reduce the price
of prescription drugs. We’re reducing the price.
[ Crowd cheers ] You know, I called up Pfizer and some of
the great drug companies — they’re great companies —
Novartis, a couple of others — about a month ago, because they raised
the price of their drugs. And I called, I said,
“What are you doing?! You can’t do that!” And they said, “Sir,
we will immediately drop the price down
to where it was.” Can you believe that?
Can you believe it? -No.
[ Laughter ] No, we can’t believe it, because
you’re doing that thing again where you describe
being President the way you want it to be, instead of the way
it actually is. [ As Trump ] I called up Pfizer
and said, “Lower your prices,” and they said,
“Right away, sir.” And then I hung up the phone
and looked out the window right as a gust of wind
blew the top off a hot lady. [ Laughter ] This job rules. [ Normal voice ] And not only
does Trump think he can just call up
drug companies and single-handedly tell them
what to do, he also complained he isn’t
getting any credit for it. -Might as well
talk about yourself, ’cause nobody else is going to.
[ Laughter ] [ Cheers and applause ]
Nobody else is going to! [ Louder cheers and applause ] Nobody else. -I’m sorry, do you really think people aren’t
talking about you enough? [ Laughter ] The only people
not talking about you Are those undiscovered tribes
in the Amazon. And even they feel
something eerie in the wind. You guys, I feel like we should
go deeper into the rainforest. This is just a hunch.
It’s just a hunch. [ Cheers and applause ] And before Trump’s proposal
even went into effect, he was already telling
his supporters That drug costs were decreasing. -We signed a bill, prescription drug prices are
going to come tumbling down. [ Cheers and applause ]
Tumbling down. So, hopefully, you don’t need
prescription drugs, but if you do,
you’re gonna get them a hell of a lot cheaper,
because it’s going this way. -That’s the president’s finger
telling you that prices are going down,
or maybe that you can get the same drugs much cheaper
in Mexico. But who?
Who are you gonna believe, the president’s finger
or the facts? -Bitter pills this new year for Americans taking
prescription drugs. 60 companies raised prices
on almost 300 drugs in the first two days
of the year. -The first two days!
They couldn’t even wait a week. That’s how little shame
these drug companies have and how little regard they have
for our President. [ As Trump ] I called them up
and I said, “Lower your prices.” And they said,
“New phone. Who dis?” And then I looked out the window just after a gust of wind blew
a turtleneck onto a hot lady. [ Laughter ] [ Normal voice ] Now, during
his State of the Union Address, Trump also mentioned
that people in other countries pay much less for
prescription drugs than Americans, and he’s right.
But judging by how at least one powerful senator
reacted to that, we probably shouldn’t expect to
see much change on that front from Republicans, either. -I am asking Congress
to pass legislation that finally takes on the
problem of global freeloading and delivers fairness
and price transparency for American patients, finally. [ Applause ] -Look how sad
Mitch McConnell is. [ Laughter ] Looks like he just found out
who won the Civil War. [ Laughter ] [ As McConnell ] Who? Aw. Was it close? [ Laughter ] [ Normal voice ] But I guess
we shouldn’t be surprised that McConnell had
that reaction, because in 2018 alone, he racked up almost $1 million
from the insurance industry and over half a million dollars from the pharmaceutical and
health-products industry. And that’s why,
when someone promises to lower the cost of drugs,
even if they’re lying, the truth is that
your senator can’t even smile. [ Applause ] This has been “The Check-in.” [ Cheers and applause ]

Hadn't needed my Advair in quite a while (asthma inhaler) and nearly fainted when I got to my pharmacy on Jan 2 and saw the cost was $945 for 60 hits. Here's one detail Seth missed: In this case (and probably in others), the pharmacy could not make the switch to the generic without MD approval because the dosages on the meds in the generic were off by a very few mcg from the name brand. I just wonder how many people get duped by this sort of thing because they don't think to ask "Is there a generic?" and "Why exactly didn't you just substitute?" Our pharmacy, Target, was taken over by CVS (Target staffed with enough people that they would automatically call you if a situation like this arose), but that's a whole different discussion…

The mexican pharmacists tell you…at least the good ones do…..this goes hidden in your pants (and I dont mean in your pockets) and these you can carry. Last month I put the cipro in my pocket cuz my pants were filled with other meds. My vehicle had an intense inspection because I have what they call a drug truck..a 2004 Ford Ranger Pickup. The border patrol told me not to bring this vehicle back over the border and to bring a different vehicle. WTF. I made sure when I went back two weeks later that it was a total mess inside. They approached me and said werent you here two days ago? I said no it was a couple of to check it again…its all ready for you. They let me pass. I can see that they are trying to do their job but being flat out harrassed is not part of their job. I am of European decent and my passport I gave them showed them I used it for that. I also showed the the dental work I had done. I do have a car but I will keep driving my truck for the fact I would rather drive a truck than a tiny car three hours to Mexico. Ironically, when I had my prius it was checked every single time…which was over a dozen times. This is at the Yuma/Algodones border.

What Bernie has worked on for "a long, long time", has been applied in other countries for years, with great success. My pharmacy is always, by law, telling me about the cheaper options to drug prescriptions my doctor has prescribed me. But, I'm the one making a choice: cheaper or more expensive. It's about I wanting a particular brand, it being expensive, but if the active ingredient is in all of them, why not choose the cheaper option?!

But, that's not all. I have a "glass roof" of how much I have to pay for my medicines/year. So, when I hit that target, the government will pay for me – my medical costs including my medication! Trump says he is going to allow individual and bulk drug purchases from foreign sources like Canada. Except Canada only gets enough inventory for its own needs. Canada has a ban on bulk exports if they will create shortages in Canada.

Doesn't matter who is president. Pharmaceutical companies keep breaking laws and never going to jail. They cheerfully pay the fines while they falsify test results, lie to doctors, pay kickbacks to doctors, bribe politicians on both sides of the aisle and kill people with their bogus products. Seth, maybe you should make some comments about big pharma.

I am not a Democrat nor a Republican; I am a privileged, white, Christian male Marine Veteran (66-69), who was stationed at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, while having a TOP SECRET CLEARANCE as an ELECTRONICS SURVEILLANCE OPERATOR. We are the front line of America's NATIONAL DEFENSE. Our predecessors broke the Japanese Code prior to Pearl Harbor. Two of our fellow Marines were killed aboard the U.S.S. LIBERTY when it was attacked by Israel; they were from our Battalion. Just outside of Raleigh, we observed a 50' billboard which read, "HELP STOP COMMUNISM AND INTEGRATION THIS IS KKK COUNTRY." The locals obviously were not offended by that sign so it is apparent they shared their sentiments. President Bone Spurs, recently was spewing his racist hate fifty-years later, igniting the local North Carolina racists to reveal that nothing has changed in 50-years. Trump called them "INCREDIBLE PATRIOTS," when in reality and CONSTITUTIONALLY, RACISTS are "DOMESTIC ENEMIES" that all Veterans took an oath to lay down our lives to protect against. Furthermore, the only "INCREDIBLE PATRIOTS" are VETERANS; everybody else freeloads on our shirttails the FREEDOM that we secured. The only change that appears to have occurred in North Carolina is they dropped their concern regarding COMMUNISM, because they are sure silent when it comes to TRUMP cozying up to PUTIN. The racial hatred still appears to be their main focus. I wonder if the sign is bigger today? A fellow Marine and I could not hitchhike across the "BIBLEBELT SOUTH" in our uniforms, because we would have been murdered; him for being my black brother, and me a CHRISTIAN, would have accused of being a "nig…-lover." Their racial hatred revealing their hypocrisy in regards to being Bible Believers, along with being DOMESTIC ENEMIES of the CONSTITUTION demonstrates their lack of character and Patriotism. Even the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE exposes them on both topics (their lack of Christianity and their undermining of the pillars this Country was founded upon: "WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT, THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL, THAT THEY ARE ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR WITH CERTAIN INALIENABLE RIGHTS, THAT AMONG THESE ARE: LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS."

President Racist also spewed his hatred at black athletes for kneeling during the playing of "THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER," all under the guise of PATRIOTISM, which included the non-veteran billionaire owners of the Professional Football Teams; and even NASCAR took offense of blacks objecting to racial injustice and inequality granted by the CONSTITUTION and their CREATOR. By Trump objecting to their right to peacefully protest, he is one "click" away from also violating "RELIGIOUS LIBERTY." Jehovah Witnesses do not stand during "The Star Spangled Banner," nor do they "Pledge Allegiance to The Flag." My fellow Veterans of Color do not enjoy or experience the same freedoms privileged whites take for granted. So, until they do, I will take a knee with them.

Comey stated, "Trump eats your soul, one lie at a time, by your silence." Dr. King basically echoed those same sentiments in his "LETTER FROM A BIRMINGHAM JAIL." Criticizing the white moderate preachers' silence; and stating he considered them more dangerous than the KKK. Once again, 50-years later where are the EVANGELICALS? They silently allow Trump to eat their morality one SIN at a time. They say nothing about his LOCKERROOM TALK" it is SIN. SILENT, when he admits he is a sexual predator on the BUSH TAPES, still a SIN. SILENT in regards to ADULTERY (Daniels &The Bunny), still a SIN! His associating with CONVICTED PEDOPHILES (JEFFREY EPSTEIN & GEORGE NADER), and not to save their souls, SIN. His racist hate is also, SIN! His pathological lying, a SIN!

A noose in a tree, and a burning Cross,
Sheets of white and hate raids at night,
Then sittin' in Church come Sunday mornin' light.
In Denial that it's all right,
    Singing "This is God's Country."
But, Can't fool Jesus, Judgment Day is Coming!
The Five Foolish Virgins have no oil.
Told to leave, "You workers of Iniquity. Jesus never knew you." With your shouts of "Send them Back!" [echo, Crucify Him!]

One final comparison: The Narcissistic Anarchistic Trump vs. Corporal Desmond Doss [Army Medic]
One corruptly rich and the other Spiritually Rich
One faked bone Spurs while the other went to war armed only with his Bible and Love in his heart.
One a racist, the other a Christian Agapeist
One without Fruit, the other a bumper crop of Spiritual Fruit
One claims he would have made a great general; the other wearing The Congressional Medal of Honor.
One claims to be the greatest President, the other died a humble farmer.
"Easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

I have 35-years of prison ministry experience (non grata); instilling a moral compass, where there wasn't one.

    K A J U.S.M.C.

    "The greatest want of the world is the want of menโ€”men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall." โ€“ {Education, p. 57.3}

take away the billion$$$ ceo pay and the over-promiseing to investors
and the scientists would be able to help people without the industrial

For those Trump supporters that think Trumps trade wars are a GOOD THING then you need to take a look around you. If you check out the prices on all of the merchandise at Walmart you will see that ALL of their prices have recently gone up at least 25%. Taco Bell is downsizing their menu because they are losing money due to Trumps TRADE WARS. Many other companies are doing the same even though these are the same companies that got HUGE TAX BREAKS from Trump. The hard-working American consumer is paying for Trumps STUPIDITY! We need him out of office, NOW! Before he does any more damage or gets anyone else killed.

I live part time in Amsterdam, and pay 150 euros per month for my healthcare insurance, for that I get EVERYTHING I need should the need arise, free prescriptions, operations, hospital stays etcetera. 5 years ago I had major back problems, in the U.S. an operation would've cost me the price of a cheap house, instead I opted to have the operation in Amsterdam, and what did that successful operation and 10 days stay in hospital cost me?, well as I said, I pay 150 euros per month, so I was fully covered.. Americans can only dream of such a healthcare system. And before you start saying I took advantage of Holland, I didn't, I live there 6 months per year and have done so since 1989, and have paid my insurance every month since 1989, even when I'm not living there I keep my payments up.
